Madras university’s Mother Teresa Hostel for Women in Chepauk is yet again mired in controversy. Students are going without food ever since the hostel mess shut down a few days ago.

“We were not getting proper food in the mess for a week and three days ago they shut it down. We have been asked to make arrangements until a new contractor comes,” said a second-year student.

Students said water supply was irregular and they are forced to buy drinking water cans. “The hostel authorities got the new water cooler five months ago but it didn’t work for even a month,” said a student. “We get water only four times a week. Due to scant supply, the campus has become unhygienic.”

Hostel warden Vaneetha Agarwal said Metrowater had stopped supplying water to the hostel every day. On the food, Agarwal said, “We are finding it hard to get a contractor for the mess. We will finalise it by Monday or Tuesday.”

This February, TOI had exposed the hostel’s poor living conditions following which the State Human Rights Commission directed the authorities to refurbish it. Though the hostel is currently undergoing renovation, the authorities are not admitting new first year students to the hostel. “The facilities are inadequate. We will start admission once the renovation work is complete,” said Agarwal.

Freshers have been directed to move to another university-run hostel in Taramani. However, few days ago its warden T Sumathi wrote to all departments requesting them not to send more students since all the 175 rooms were occupied.

“We are spending Rs 15 lakh to revamp the Chepauk hostel. But we are working out an alternative arrangement where first year students in urgent need of accommodation can stay,” said P Duraisamy, the university vice-chancellor.
