: On Friday, P Bharathi, 28, left Nageshwari, 19, wife of 23 days with the promise of finding them a rented house in Chennai to start their marital life. Bharathi, a mechanic with MTC in Chennai, had his leave cut short because of shortage of people at work. Early on Sunday morning, Nageshwari, who was living with Bharathi’s parents in Tiruvannamalai, got a call informing her that her husband was dead after an MTC bus ploughed into a room where he was sleeping at 1am.
“He left without applying vermilion on my forehead on Aadi kiruthigai day,” said the teenage widow who got married on July 4. Bharathi had applied for a month’s leave, but was summoned to duty on the eighth day. He went back to his wife last weekend, this time hoping for a few days with Nageshwari.
A driver was taking the bus out from the depot to the maintenance pit when he lost control and crashed into the room where MTC crew were resting. Bharathi and Sekar, a technician, died as the wall fell on them. Six others were injured. Bharathi, who had applied for leave on Friday for the auspicious ‘Aadi kiruthigai,’ was denied leave and was asked to report for night duty.
“I called him every night at eight, but on Saturday he couldn’t attend my call, as he was busy at work. He did not call me back either,” she said. “We hardly had any time together. He kept saying that his was hard work he couldn’t avoid.” Bharathi had been living in a bachelor accommodation near the Vadapalani MTC depot. Nageshwari insisted he took her to Chennai, and the newly-wed was searching for a house when tragedy stuck.
“This woman is too young to overcome such a tragedy in her life. We have no words to console her,” said Bharathi’s sister who came to Chennai on hearing the news. Relatives and friends were at a loss trying to console Nageshwari, who sat wailing on the ground at the accident site.
