Forty-nine-year-old Dhanalakshmi’s grit saved both her life and her chain. The woman despite slit injuries on her hand, managed to grab hold of her chain at Poonamallee and raised alarm until help reached her.

Dhanalakshmi, a resident of Omshakthi Nagar in Kattupakkam, was returning home after buying grocery at a nearby shop when the incident took place.

At 7pm a biker, who had a ‘press’ sticker on his bike, approached her and sought directions for an address.

As Dhanalakshmi was telling him the way he cut a part of her six sovereign gold chain, while the other half fell on the road.

She raised alarm, when he brandished a knife and slit her palm.

As he bent down to pick the other half of the chain that had fallen on the ground, Dhanalakshmi caught hold of him by his shirt. He tried to move away, but couldn’t escape from her clutches.

She began shouting for help, and residents from the nearby houses came to her rescue.

“Though my hand was bleeding, I ensured I did not leave him as I knew I could easily get help, as houses were not far away,” said Dhanalakshmi.

Around ten who reached the scene, bashed him up before handing him over to the police.

He was later identified as Shivakumar, 45, of Indira Nagar, Vadapalani. He initially told the police that he was a journalist.

He possessed a fake identity card with a name ‘Agni sudar’ on it. Police found that he had created his own card at a printing press to use in incase he got caught for traffic offences.

“He is not a previous offender. His first attempt proved a failure,” said an investigating officer. He told police that he had mounting debts and he decided to snatch the chain to earn a fast buck.
