CHENNAI: After the Supreme Court dismissed Tamil Nadu's appeal against the Madras high court order that quashed a GO for 85% reservation for state board students in medical admissions, Tamil Nadu chief minister Eddapadi K Palaniswami met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Friday and requested him to exempt the state from NEET for medical admissions.
"We expect a favourable decision from the Centre," the chief minister said after the meeting.
Palaniswami met the PM after the swearing-in ceremony of Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu.
Medical counselling to start next week
Officials in the Directorate of Medical Education said they would have to start counselling by next week so that they could complete the process before the Supreme Court deadline of August 31.
"We have got more time to complete BDS admission as the Dental Council of India has extended deadline by ten days (till September 10). But we are yet to receive any such extension from the Medical Council of India. We will have to start the medical counselling soon," said director of medical education Dr A Edwin Joe.
This year, the state selection committee is in charge of admission of students to MBBS courses in 22 state-run colleges and 10 self-financing colleges as well as BDS students in 19 colleges. While most states and Union territories have completed the first round of counselling and have started the process for the second round, Tamil Nadu is yet to publish its rank list. There are more than 50,000 applications this year for 3,377 MBBS seats.
The state put on hold the counselling, scheduled to begin on July 15, after the Madras high court quashed a GO allowing reservation of 85% of medical and dental seats in the government quota for students from the state board.
Selection committee secretary Dr G Selvarajan has said the committee is ready with the rank list in all permutations, with or without NEET, and with or without the 85% reservation. "We will publish it as soon as we get orders from the government," he said.
