The catering, tourism and ticketing subsidiary of Indian Railways, IRCTC, has cancelled the much-touted Karwa Chauth special train after only two couples signed up for their “dream holiday” in the majestic Rajasthan Deluxe.
The IRCTC had offered 78 seats in this luxury train, which offered a shower cubicle and foot massage, besides seating area, to make the journey “memorable”.
“The women fast on Karwa Chauth day and they offer puja. People might have thought they should stay at home on the day of the fast. How can you run the train without occupancy,” said an official.
Another reason could be the high fares of ₹1.03 lakh per couple in first AC and ₹90,100 per couple in AC-2 tier. Though only married couples were allowed on the train, they could bring their children along and IRCTC had assured to take care of them during the trip.
IRCTC had announced to run the Rajasthan Deluxe for a five-day tour. The train was to depart from Safdarjung station in Delhi on October 14 and visit historical sites in Rajasthan, including Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli, Gadisar Lake, Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, Amber Fort and City Palace.
The train was scheduled to return on October 18. The festival of Karwa Chauth falls on October 17.
While launching the booking for this special train, IRCTC had said the “age-old tradition emanates from Rajasthan. This is observed by womenfolk for the long life and well-being of their husband”.
