Income tax department officials conducted raids on Thursday at educational institutions owned by former deputy chief minister G Parameshwara and former Union minister RL Jalappa, both from Congress, in connection with a multi-crore tax evasion case linked to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) held for medical and dental college admissions this year.
The raids were conducted even as the opposition Congress and JD(S) were gearing up to attack ruling BJP over delayed flood relief on the opening day of the three-day winter session.
Around 150 officials raided 30 premises at various locations in Bengaluru, Tumakuru, Nelamangala (Bengaluru Rural), Kolar and Chikkaballapura districts and some places in Rajasthan, official sources said. The searches will continue on Friday.
While Congress termed the raids “BJP vendetta’’, I-T officials said they initiated action as part of the probe to check alleged irregularities in allocating medical seats under the NEET quota in two medical colleges run by Parameshwara and one by Jalappa.
“A case of alleged forgery by impersonation and alleged illegal payments made to secure 186 seats by 68 students from Rajasthan was the trigger for the raids,’’ they added.
Officials swooped down on Parameshwara’s properties around 6.30am, starting from Sri Siddhartha Medical College in Tumakuru and Sri Siddhartha Institute of Medical Sciences and Research near Nelamangala. In Kolar, sleuths raided the Jalappaowned Devaraj Urs Medical College. All three colleges are deemed universities.
The teams raided real estate firms in Nelamangala and Jalappa’s relatives’ houses in Doddaballapura and Chikkaballapura. Sources said searches were also conducted at Parameshwara’s Sadashivnagar residence in Bengaluru.
Officials seized documents showing undeclared income and college managements accepting money in cash from students. They seized ₹2 crore in cash and property papers.
Parameshwara was deputy chief minister in the H D Kumaraswamy JD(S)-Congress coalition government in Karnataka that collapsed in July after losing a trust vote in the assembly. Jalappa was once a confidant of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, but later switched allegiance to Congress.
