MADURAI: Students from various colleges in Madurai came together on Friday to highlight violence against women and to highlight the importance of gender equality.
EKTA Resource Centre for Women organised a special event at Gandhi Museum as part of the 'One Billion Rising' campaign. The ‘One Billion Rising’ is a global campaign to end violence against women.
More than 500 students from around 10 colleges and members of woman organisations took part in the event which saw a procession, flying of balloons and oath taking. Dances, skits and other special cultural programmes were also held.
"Violence against women still prevails significantly in our society. It is always an ongoing process to spread awareness and sensitise both men and women about gender equality. The very definition of violence against women has evolved. It is important to first understand and recognise any form of abuse before fighting against it," said Bimla C, director of EKTA Resource Centre For Women, Madurai.
