Teacher gives girl pesticide to help her skip board exam

A teacher has been arrested after a Class X girl student from a private school in Shirti village of Shirol taluka died due to poisoning at a hospital here on Tuesday. Police said the teacher, Nilesh Balu Pradhane, of Bhairewadi in Kurundwadallegedly gave the student, Sanika Mali, a pesticide which she mixed with water and drank in an attempt to fall ill and escape the SSC exams as she was not prepared for it.

“The suspect, who was arrested on Thursday, has admitted to have given the poisonous liquid to the girl student,” said police.

Besides IPC Section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), Pradhane has been charged under IPC Sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc. with intent to commit an offence).

A JMFC court on Friday remanded Pradhane in police custody till March 6. Kishor Kale, deputy superintendent of police, Ichalkaranji division, said, “On February 20, Sanika had gone to school to appear for the practical exam and complained of uneasiness. She was immediately admitted to a private hospital in Kolhapur. On February 25, she died during treatment.”

“The hospital authorities have stated that she had consumed poisonous liquid. Based on her parents’ complaint, we launched an investigation. After enquiring with teachers, staff and girl students, we detained Pradhane, who confessed to have provided a pesticide to Sanika on her demand,” said the officer.
