Chennai: Expressing shock over the death of a pregnant woman, Usha, who was killed when a police inspector kicked the two-wheeler on which she was riding pillion, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced a compensation of ₹7 lakh for the bereaved family.
“Considering the condition of her family, I have sanctioned ₹7 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund,” said the chief minister in an official release.
“On my orders, the Tiruverumbur transport police inspector Kamaraj has been arrested and also suspended from service.
“An enquiry has been ordered and once the report is presented, further action will be taken,” said Palaniswami. Makkal Needhi Maiam leader Kamal Haasan too has announced an aid of ₹10 lakh for the bereaved family.
Meanwhile, opposition parties DMK, PMK, Congress and Left parties demanded stringent action against the police officer.
“It was an inhuman act by the police inspector. The police have also lathicharged public who protested peacefully and this is condemnable,” tweeted DMK working president M K Stalin.
Usha’s husband could have been fined for not wearing helmet, said PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss.
“Though, to be fair, there are several personnel in the police department who behave in a responsible manner,” said Anbumani. He said the government should sanction ₹25 lakh for the family.
CPM state secretary K Balakrishnan said the government should charge the inspector with murder.

Usha death echoes in HC
Chennai: The tragic death of Usha at Tiruverumbur in Trichy echoed in the Madras high court on Thursday, when a PIL sought action against the police. When advocate Aswathaman mentioned the matter, the first bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose sought to know from the government pleader what action had been taken by the government. When it was informed that an FIR had been filed in the case, the bench asked, “Already FIR is filed, what more do you want? The advocate said police were being rough with people and were extracting money from vehicle-users. Meanwhile, the NHRC on Thursday took suo motu cognisance of media reports about the death of Usha and sought a report from the TN government. TNN
