CBSE re-exam: students angry

It will affect the results, say teachers

An uncertain summer with the preparation for competitive exams hampered, and scheduled tours cancelled apart from increased pressure await thousands of students, with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) deciding to re-conduct the Mathematics examination for 10th class and Economics paper of 12th class after leakage of the question paper reported in some parts of the country.

“It’s unnecessary pressure on us for no fault of ours,” says K. Praneeth of CGR International School in Madhapur, who appeared for the 10th class Mathematics examination. His family had planned a tour to Tirupati and Chennai for the holidays, but even that looks uncertain now.

Vindhya of Howard Public School, Himayatnagar is not all that worried about taking the exam again as she is confident of her capabilities, but asks how fair it is for the officials to ask thousands of students to take the re-exam. “I have written the exam well today, but waiting for the new schedule and then going through the rigmarole is a bit painful,” she says. The re-conduct of the exam will also affect the 12th class students seriously preparing for the competitive exams as they have to travel in two boats at the same time, says Narsimha Reddy, Principal, Hyderabad Public School, Ramanthapur. This will hamper their preparations, more so in a highly competitive space like Hyderabad where students from other boards will concentrate on competitive exams while CBSE students will have to divide their time. Though the CBSE said that it will post the new dates within a week, teachers feel 15 to 20 days will be lost, and it will also affect the results. Generally 10th class results are expected in the last week of May but now that may move to June.

The decision has also thrown the schedule of school tours haywire. HPS Ramanthapur students are supposed to leave for a tour of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh on April 12 but now all the tickets have to be re-booked or those students will lose out, both money and the tour.

Students also took to social media to pour their woes out and put up some serious questions for officials. Laced with sarcasm, a student asked: ‘Before re-exam, students have right to know (1) paper leak from where ? (2) who did it? (3) will government take hard action? (4) what guarantee that it will be not happen again?”

“Re-exam just doesn’t make things right; rather it is demoralising for the students. #CBSE Maths,” tweeted another. “After 8 years of CCE the 2018 X batch was asked to prepare for full syllabus board exam ALL OF A SUDDEN. This batch, worked REALLY hard for this maths exam. And now, a re-exam puts too much pressure on them,” tweeted another.
