Don’t resort to downsizing staff: AICTE to colleges

TIMES NEWS NETWORK   10.03.2018

Chennai: The All India Council for Technical Education has instructed all technical institutions to refrain from pruning faculty strength on the pretext of meeting the revised studentteacher ratio.

Towards the end of 2017, the AICTE reduced the faculty-student ratio from 1:15 to 1:20 — the basic minimum that technical institutions would have to maintain. This triggered a strong response from teachers.

However, using this revision as a reason, some institutions were planning to downsize staff as they would not be able to meet the minimum ratio, said AICTE officials. Teachers in technical institutions said that while no institution would openly admit it, many were removing staff members as it would be more economical for them.

Saying this was a matter of great concern, the council has said that no AICTE-approved institution should downsize teaching faculty, and “excess teaching staff, if any, should be adjusted in a phased manner against attrition, superannuation, resignation, etc., in due course.”
