Don’t blame only cops in traffic deaths: HC

TIMES NEWS NETWORK  10.03.2018

Chennai: Two days after Trichy resident Usha died when a traffic police inspector kicked her husband’s bike, and a day after a Class VII student died travelling on the footboard of an MTC bus, the Madras high court said there was no point in merely blaming police officers for everything. “Public and people should be self-disciplined and should realise their responsibilities,” said the first bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose.

The remarks came on Friday after advocate R Y George Williams told the bench that Vicky of Washermenpet fell to his death from a bus on route 56-C, on its way to Thiruvottiyur. Government pleader T N Rajagopalan said that as per news reports the bus was not crowded and yet the boy was travelling on the footboard. The unfortunate incident may have occurred due to footboard travelling, he said.

The bench then referred to the Trichy incident in which Usha, riding pillion with her husband, died because of police interception. Though the police officers concerned had been arrested and the government granted ₹7 lakh compensation to the victim’s kin, there was a version that Usha’s husband was not wearing a helmet, nor did he stop the vehicle when signalled by the police, it observed. It was when the man sped past did the inspector chase and try to catch them. The unfortunate incident happened then. “When there is a rule that two-wheeler riders should wear helmet that should be obeyed by the public,” the bench said, adding that there was no question of merely blaming police officers. The public should also realise their responsibility and it should have self-discipline, the bench said.
