‘Watch what you eat if you are a diabetic’
Chennai:17.11.2019
Neuberg Diagnostics Private Limited on Saturday organised a patient education talk by Dr V Mohan, chairman and chief of diabetology, Dr Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre, on “What’s new in preventing and combating diabetes.”
Giving an introduction to diabetes, Mohan said, “Glucose is a key source of energy to the body and its metabolism is highly regulated by hormones like insulin and glucagon. Diabetes is a condition that impairs the body’s ability to process blood sugar, leading to persistently high levels of glucose in the blood (hyperglycemia). There are different types of diabetes. The diagnosis of each one is based on tests. The advantage of knowing which type of diabetes one has is that the treatment can be tailored accordingly.” He said nutrition and physical activity are key to a healthy lifestyle for diabetics. “If you have diabetes, you need to keep an eye on what you eat, how much you eat and when you eat, and how active a lifestyle you lead. By making healthy food choices and understanding ‘good’ and ‘bad’ carbohydrates, it can become easy to control your blood glucose levels.” TNN
