Medical and dental postgraduate aspirants who are vying for seats under the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) and management quotas will now have to attend common counselling that will be conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). This will be effective from the 2017-18 academic year.
Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil on Wednesday said that with this, the KEA would conduct common counselling for all seats in the State.
The NRI and management quotas with 615 seats across the State account for 25 % of the total number of seats in private colleges and deemed universities. However, the counselling process for the remaining 75 % medical seats in the State is already under way. Nevertheless, two rounds of counselling for aspirants under the 25 % quota will be conducted separately. A calendar of events will be announced in two days, Dr. Patil said. “We will open the registration portal again for candidates who wish to apply for NRI and management quota as many of these candidates may not have applied,” he added.
Students who have written NEET will be eligible to obtain these seats.
Dr. Patil said that fees for the NRI and management quota seats will be fixed by colleges.
Action against student’s father
The Medical Education Department has decided to initiate action against the ENT specialist at the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute who was on the panel which gave a prospective student a fake disability certificate. She had used the certificate to obtain an MBBS seat at the Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences in 2012-13.
Minister for Medical Education Sharan Prakash Patil said the department would initiate action against Mahesh Babu, the girl’s father who was also on the panel. The Karnataka Examinations Authority cancelled her seat last week after verification by doctors from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences that the girld had indeed produced a fake disability certificate.
The student was to receive her MBBS degree in 2017-2018 and was in her final year of college.
