Not Aware Of Inquiry, Says Vice Chancellor
Faculty and students of Bharathiar University are keenly watching the developments after the directorate of vigilance and anticorruption initiated an inquiry against vice-chancellor A Ganapathi for irregularities in the appointment of 80 faculty members in November 2016. However, Ganapathi, told TOI he was not aware of any inquiry against him.A former professor of the university told TOI, “This is a good move by the government. For a long time, teachers' associations, appli cants and many others have been complaining about the irregularities in process of appointments. This inquiry will put on hold the violations in other varsities, I expect.“
Sources in the higher education department said A Ganapathi was called to Chennai to submit details of the appo intments. In November 2016, TOI reported at least thrice about the irregularities in the appointments. A senior official of the higher education department said that keeping in mind these reports, Ganapathi was asked to submit written explanation for all the allegations. Highly places sources in the department said that evidence against Ganapathi and a few others were being gathered in the last two weeks. “A detailed report was prepared by us and sent to the DVAC. Following this, an inquiry has been initiated,“ said the source.
“I am not aware of any such thing. Even if there is an inquiry , we have all records to show that we followed all ru les,“ said Ganapathi. Sources in the higher education department said the allegations involved violation of the 200point roster system for recruiting faculty , lack of awareness about government orders on stalling the recruitment process and bribery .
The government, after reading reports of violations and irregularities, asked Ganapathi to stall the recruitment. “He (Ganapathi) ignored the communication and blamed it on the then registrar-in-charge.Also, he conducted the syndicate meeting to pass the decision of appointing the faculty where the members of the syndicate were asked to keep their mobile phones switched-off,“ said a source.
Besides Ganapathi, there are other members of the university and outside who have been involved in the process.“They will also be inquired, and action taken accordingly ,“ said a source.
