₹12L worth gold chains snatched from women

Two women lost their gold chains to bikeborne snatchers in the city on Wednesday and Thursday. At least 33 sovereigns of gold jewellery, worth ₹9 lakh, were robbed. Police have registered separate cases and are on the lookout for the suspects.

Police said R Roopa, 48, of Shanthi Nagar in Kolathur, was walking near SRP Colony on Wednesday around 8pm, when two men on a motorbike snatched her 8-sovereign chain in an isolated spot. Police said Roopa was not able to register the identity of the accused as they were wearing helmets. The Peravallur police have registered a case and are skimming through CCTV camera footage for leads.

In the second incident, Akila, of Thiru Nagar in Villivakkam, was walking to a neighbourhood shop on Thursday when two men on a motorbike snatched at least 15 sovereigns of gold chains, worth ₹7 lakh. “Akila sustained injuries on her neck trying to resist the attack,” he added.

Police said Akila remembered the assailants’ bike registration number partly. The Villivakkam police registered a case and are investigating further.

₹3.5L mangalsutra goes missing

Chennai:

A 15-sovereign mangalsutra, worth more than ₹3.5 lakh, was reported stolen from the house of a dancer in Virugambakkam on Thursday morning.

Police said Savitha Nagaraj, 38, of Vivekananda Street in Gandhi Nagar, Saligramam, usually removed her mangalsutra before going to bed, police said. On Thursday, she couldn’t find it when she woke up and realised that it was kept close to a window and might have been stolen. The Virugambakkam police are investigating. TNN
