To check whether more students can be accommodated
A four-member team from the Medical Council of India (MCI) began its two-day inspection of Madurai Medical College on Wednesday to check whether the facilities available were sufficient to increase the student intake from 150 to 250 from next academic year.
The team, led by G.V. Prakash from Tirupati, inspected the works taking place in the college, including establishment of the academic block, newly constructed hostels and the administrative block.
The team will submit its report to the MCI, based on which a decision will be taken on increasing the student intake.
The MCI team members, who interacted with Dean (in-charge) S. Shanmugasundaram, checked whether the facilities available at the college would be sufficient to provide quality education to more students.
They also assessed the faculty strength and enquired with some of the heads of departments about the treatment provided to patients and patient inflow.
Dr. Shanmugasundaram told them that the foundation stone was laid recently for the construction of a huge lecture hall and an academic block to house six non-clinical departments at a total cost of Rs. 37 crore. He also said works were in progress for construction of new hostel blocks for men and women.
Similarly, a four-member MCI team began its two-day inspection of Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TVMCH) in Palayamkottai to check the facilities to accommodate 250 students.
The team, headed by Chandrakant from Nagpur, visited all the departments of the hospital and inspected the facilities at outpatients and inpatients sections.
They also interacted with Dean S.M. Kannan and heads of various departments to understand the hospital’s role in providing medical assistance to poor patients from Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari districts.
Based on the team’s report, the MCI will decide on increasing the number of students from 150 to 250.
As the TVMCH has augmented its infrastructure over the past few years and introduced new departments to provide quality healthcare to poor patients, the Centre sanctioned Rs. 120 crore for establishing a super-speciality block, for which the State government has released its contribution of Rs. 30 crore.
The facility is likely to be inaugurated through videoconferencing when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Madurai later this month to lay the foundation stone for All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
