Multilingual actor Prakash Raj on Tuesday made a New Year resolve to test the political waters by contesting the 2019 general elections. He tweeted his decision to contest as an independent candidate and said the details of the constituency will be announced soon.

Sources said he’ll contest from Karnataka, Telangana or Uttar Pradesh. In Karnataka, he has set his eyes on four constituencies – Dakshina Kannada, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru, Uttara Kannada and Bengaluru South.

Bunt community, to which Raj belongs, has considerable population in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. Raj, who is known for his anti-BJP stance, is the third prominent actor after Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan to enter politics in recent years.

In 2017, he had said he’s open to the idea of entering politics after the murder of his friend and journalist Gauri Lankesh. Raj made this announcement after he faced backlash from BJP sympathizers for questioning the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Gauri’s murder.

“I’m not anti-Hindu. I’m anti-Modi, anti-Amit Shah and anti-Aditya Nath. And according to me, Modi, Shah and Aditya Nath are not Hindus,” Raj had tweeted, drawing more ire from their supporters.

Meanwhile, BJP leader S Suresh Kumar offered some tips to Raj in cinema parlance. “There’s no re-take here (politics) and there is no scope for editing. Prepared script is a rarity. Action-cut is totally banned. Beware!” he tweeted.
