HC okays sinking of wells on lake in Madambakkam
Chennai:24.08.2019
The Madras high court has declined to stop the PWD from digging five giant wells on Madambakkam lake to supply more than 18 lakh litres of water per day to Chitlapakkam and Madambakkam areas.
Noting that the government has come up with such a scheme at ₹2.70 crore to provide water to needy, a division bench of Justices S Manikumar and Subramonium Prasad dismissed a batch of PILs and said such acts could not be termed as arbitrary. The batch of petitioners said the lake was dry, and in a dilapidated condition. The lake area has shrunken due to improper desilting. Sinking wells will be detrimental to the lake.
Opposing the pleas, the district authorities submitted location of the wells, quantum of proposed drawal of water for drinking purpose does not pose any threat to the water body. TNN
