Govt okays ₹4,300cr for EWS quota in 158 edu institutions

The Centre has sanctioned an additional amount of ₹4,315.15 crore for implementation of the 10% quota for the economically weak among the general category across 158 centrally funded higher education institutions (HEIs).
In addition to the 1.18 lakh seats that had been added in these institutions in 2019, which include the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutesof Management (IIMs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), there will be another 95,783 seats to be added in the 2020-21admission cycle.
The money has been releasedtotheinstitutionsfor the two-phased EWS quote implementation which includes scholarships, salaries of teachers and infrastructure creation. A senior HRD official said, “The institutions have nearly completed the implementation of the first phase of the EWS quota implementation. The universities sent their proposals to the ministry. After studying the proposals, the governmentsanctionedthe additional fund to facilitate the implementation of the reservation.”
Of the total money sanctioned, a major portion will be used for creation of infrastructure.The governmenthassanctioned ₹2,680.18 crore for the purpose, followed by ₹917.14 crore for scholarships.
