ERODE, NOVEMBER 03, 2018 00:00 IST

Institutes to be handed over to the departmentfrom 2019-20 academic year

The IRT Perundurai Medical College and Hospital and School of Nursing that were run by the Institute of Road Transport will henceforth be run by the Health and Family Welfare Department for which the State Government has issued an order recently.

The Institute of Road Transport, Chennai, started the college on 319.40 acres at Perundurai from the academic year 1992-93 with an annual intake of 60 MBBS students. Contributions were made by the employees of the State Transport Undertaking for starting the institute.

While 39 seats are filled by the State Government, 21 seats are filled by the college management. The seats were increased to 100 from 2017-18, with following allocation: 15 seats under Government of India quota, 55 seats under Government of Tamil Nadu quota and 30 seats for the management. The School of Nursing was started in 2008-2009 with an intake of 20 students that was increased to 60 from 2018-19.

Since the Transport Department could not upgrade the facilities due to poor financial position, there was a long-pending demand from the political parties, public and other organisations urging the government to take over the college.

While participating in the MGR Centenary birth celebrations in Erode on September 9, 2017, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced that the government may consider converting the college as Government Medical College.

A year after his announcement, the government has taken a policy decision to hand over the institutes to the Health and Family Department from the academic year 2019-20. The order said that apart from handing over the movable and immovable properties of the institutes, 30 MBBS seats will continue to be allotted to the wards of the Transport Department employees. Officials said that the hospital will be upgraded with advanced equipment besides improving the infrastructure in the coming years.
