Workshop for cardiologists, cardiac surgeons in the city
CHENNAI, JUNE 07, 2019 00:00 IST
400 specialists from across the world expected to attend
This weekend a workshop for cardiologists and cardiac surgeons will be held in the city.
At the workshop, expected to be attended by experts from Asia, Europe, United States and Australia, the specialists would discuss a method that will be most beneficial to patients.
The ‘Sentient Summit’ will see participation by 400 cardiologists and cardiac surgeons from across the world. The event will have discussions on current breakthroughs in cardiac care technology, said Sai Satish, interventional cardiologist attached to Apollo Hospitals. The summit would discuss how valve therapies can be made less invasive for patients. It would also explore how to make procedures more effective and viable in countries like India where many patients do not have medical insurance and have to pay out of their own pocket. Dr. Satish said often people may require a particular kind of treatment and not necessarily an open heart surgery. The kind of procedure needed could be decided if the surgeon and the cardiologist together discuss the treatment options available for patients.
An international trainer for transcatheter aortic valve programmes, Dr. Satish is hoping to introduce the concept of a ‘heart team’ which will include the patient, the referring physician, the intervention cardiologist, cardiac surgeon and cardiac anaesthetist.
