TIMES NEWS NETWORK

New Delhi:23.06.2019

A senior Air India commander, who is also the airline’s regional director (east), has been suspended for allegedly stealing a wallet at a Sydney duty-free shop on Saturday, just before he was to pilot a non-stop flight to Delhi.

Captain Rohit Bhasin was suspended on arrival here. He was also relieved of his responsibilities as regional director (east) with immediate effect. The pilot is learned to have told the airline authorities that he was “elated” on receiving a very good piece of news on the personal front before boarding flight AI 301and so decided to quickly shop for a gift for someone. As he was getting delayed, Bhasin claimed that he “inadvertently rushed off to the aircraft without realizing I had not paid for it (the gift)”.

A receipt found on Bhasin, who had paid for a jacket, showed that he had not payed for the TUMI wallet found inside the jacket.

Without prejudice to any disciplinary action to be initiated against you and pending enquiry, you are hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect.”

In a statement, AI spokesperson Dhananjay Kumar said: “AI lays the highest stress on proper conduct of its staff and has a zero-tolerance policy towards acts of impropriety. There is an initial report of one of its captains, Rohit Bhasin, who is also working as a regional director, picking up a wallet from a duty-free shop in Sydney. AI has instituted an inquiry into this incident and placed the captain under suspension.”
