Responding to a call from the University Grants Commission (UGC), a group of current and retired professors from Madurai have formed a 20-member core team and roped in subject experts from across the country to help the commission reevaluate PhD theses completed in the last ten years.

The UGC had announced in May that it would be conducting a study on the quality of PhD theses in Indian universities, the scope of which would involve theses completed in different disciplines in various central, state, private and deemed-to-be universities in the last 10 years. Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) officials had told TOI in May that UGC had notified them to call upon teaching faculty from the university and affiliated colleges to apply to be part of the team to review the theses. According to the experts, the study could also cover the engineering field.

P S Navaraj, a retired teaching faculty from the city who is part of the core team, told TOI that the team was formed to help evaluate the theses as a group rather than individuals. “The 25 experts from diverse subjects are from across the country, including from top institutions like Indian Institute of Science (IISC). UGC has said that the review should be done in six months and we submitted the proposal on June 10,” he said.

The UGC decision to conduct the study comes in the backdrop of several experts questioning the quality and originality of the PhD research carried out in the country over the last few years.

Senior professors and academicians also commented that when it came to quality, most thesis works hardly had societal implementation. As for originality, the theses were often a reproduction of previous research works.

Former vice-chairman of UGC H Devaraj said that the study might come in handy to address the serious issues with PhD research in India. “The scenario in our country is such that PhD is the cheapest degree to secure. When compared to the western countries, we are at least 40 years behind in research work,” he said.
