Anna University released details of 92 engineering colleges against which penal has been action by reducing student intake by 25% to 50% for lack of faculty members and infrastructure.
But, instead of releasing the list of 92 colleges separately, it has released the whole list of 557 engineering colleges, which has drawn criticism from academicians and parents. “Students and parents choosing a particular college can verify whether it has faced penal action by the university,” officials said.
The colleges that are facing punitive action, an indicator (index 1) has been given against the number of seats. Some of the colleges have been punished by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), which has also reduced intake for some colleges, these are marked as well (index 2).
Some professors criticised the move by Anna University saying it will not serve any purpose as students and parents may not be able to individually verify the status of the colleges. “The university should have released the list of 92 colleges which do not have basic facilities, faculty and infrastructure. Further, it should revisit the 158 colleges which have submitted the compliance report to ensure whether they have actually improved their facilities,” principal of a city engineering college said.
For the first time, around 170 faculty members from IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore and NIT Trichy visited the engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu as part of inspection committee, along with faculty members of Anna University. Of the 537 colleges inspected by the committee, 250 colleges were issued notice for lack of facilities.
When asked the reason for not releasing the list of 92 colleges separately, the officials said it was a decision of the higher authorities.
