The 5.5-m-wide structure will replace a level-crossing
Tenders will soon be floated for the construction of approach roads, retaining walls and stormwater drains for the completion of the Radha Nagar subway in Chromepet. The Highways Department recently began work to demolish buildings on a 200-metre stretch of the Radha Nagar Main Road to make way for the construction of the subway to replace the railway level-crossing there.
“It will take us a few more days to remove the debris. The compensation amount for the land and structures has already been deposited in the court,” explained a source in the Highways Department. The box structure of the subway has already been constructed by the railways.
The subway — with a width of 5.5 m — will allow traffic from both sides. “Vehicles as tall and big as ambulances will be able to use it. The subway has been a long-felt need of residents in the area, since around 40 deaths happen at the railway crossing every year. Once the subway is completed, pedestrians will be able to walk freely,” explained the official.
Revised sanction
The subway has remained in the pipeline for over a decade, with proposals changed again and again.
“Tenders will be called for in a couple of months and construction is likely to commence by October-November. The works are expected to cost around Rs. 26 crore, and will take a year to complete. We will write to the government, seeking revised administrative sanction,” an official source added.
“The subway is a must as it would help prevent traffic congestion and unnecessary deaths,” said G. Krishnan, a resident.
