The state government is set
to build its second dental college, in the southern district of
Virudhunagar, nearly 40 years after the first came up in Chennai. The
100 seats available in the college from 2018 will take the number of
dental seats in state-run colleges to 200. On Wednesday , chief
minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy issued orders for the establishment of
the institution, based on an announcement by former chief minister J
Jayalalithaa in the state assembly on August 25, 2015. Palaniswami has
given the nod for the state health department to begin construction of
buildings and appoint a dean, a release said.
after setting up infrastructure and appointing faculty , the state will
apply for permission from the Dental Council of India to admit students
into BDS course, health secretary J Radhakrishnan said.
The state, which had 21medical colleges, had put off plans to start dental colleges as the demand for MBBS courses was higher. Now, there are 18 self-financing dental colleges under the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University besides deemed universities. The Tamil Nadu Dental College established in Chennai in 1980 was the sole state-run institution. “ Although there are many dental colleges in the state, we felt the need for a government tertiary care centre in the south,“ he said.
As of now, out-patients dental services are provided in district hospitals and primary health centres thrice a week. “ A government dental college hospital will be able to offer specialised services free,“ a senior doctor said.
