Sastra varsity gets eviction notice

CHENNAI, SEPTEMBER 26, 2018 00:00 IST

Asked to vacate 28 buildings by Oct. 3

The Thanjavur tahsildar has served a notice on the Shanmuga Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (Sastra University) at Tirumalaisamudram in Thanjavur district, asking it to vacate 28 buildings constructed on land belonging to the Prison Department by October 3. Eviction proceedings will be initiated if the university fails to do so by the stipulated date, the notice has warned.

The notice follows a decision of the Thanjavur Collector, who had, following a direction of the Madras High Court, convened a high-level meeting on September 22 and passed orders instructing the Revenue Divisional Officer and the tahsildar to remove the encroachments immediately. The prison authorities are considering the possibility of utilising the buildings for an ‘open air jail’, proposed on a stretch of 58.17 acres, including 20.62 acres encroached upon and occupied by the private university since 1985.

The Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Tiruchi, was told to raise a fence and protect the land by providing round-the-clock security. In September, the Madras HC directed the State to take possession of the encroached land within four weeks.

  1. Corrupt hands of despotism is the reason for the destruction of educational institutions. Even judiciary has miserably failed to reckon the necessity of the students welfare. The coercive law leads to precarious situation. Law washed its hands;courts failed to apply the proposition” Just cause and excuse” (by permitting the institution to function for the best advantage of students community). Destruction of a university may be truly asserted to be a malicious motive. Is it a deliberate conspiracy to drive the rivals from the educational turf. The fate of numerous students hang in doubt ,it is nothing but a casualty due to legal absurdity. What could possibly be expressed more clearly is those who are responsible for destroying the students career will be ostracized by the student’s community and they will fade into insignificance. Should the students be forced to sail on a wrecked ship and enter the employment harbor with a wrecked and dismasted stage. No one can read the news of destruction of the university building without pain and anguish. Few will be reduced to tears. Its legal harshness and a blot on history. Most parents and students have in their heart if not consciously -to get the matter resolved with a least legal impairment. The pride of the university has to be restored by retaining the management and the staff . When an institution is pulled down or razed to rubbles it indeed saps the foundation of the students community. Knowledge is said to be mature only when it is constitutionally integral.
