Fears of another question paper leak at Anna University

Suspicions of another question paper leak at Anna University, this time of the test to select 350 assistant engineers for the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco), have been sparked by images of handwritten notes circulating on WhatsApp and other social media groups.

The university conducts the tests for Tangedco and the images, which turned up two days after the test, were of questions that had appeared and the correct answers. More than 80,000 candidates took the written test on December 30 at 124 centres across Tamil Nadu. Electrical engineering candidates said the image they received in their WhatsApp groups contained not just questions asked in part C of the question paper, but also the right answers marked against them.

One candidate from Chennai, requesting anonymity, said it was impossible for someone to write down all the questions verbatim after the test was complete. The question booklet has to be returned with the answersheet. “So, the leak must have happened prior to the test,” he added.

Corroborating this, sources at Anna University said they suspected the role of lower-rank staff. “After compiling the final list of questions, it is sent for proofreading and typing. Usually cell phone or camera usage is restricted in these areas. Knowing this, someone has noted down all the questions with the answers in a diary. Later, this must have been photographed and circulated,” said an official who asked not to be identified.

Professor S Rajendra Boopathy, who is in charge of conducting the test, said he had no idea about any leak and he was ready to open the sealed room where the answersheets were stored and check if there was any wrongdoing only if the vice-chancellor instructed him to. Tangedco officials said that they were no way connected with the conduct of the exam as it was for Anna University to prepare the question paper, conduct the test and submit the final list of candidates to them.
