In a rare move, the department of school education has sent a joint director of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) on compulsory retirement over graft charges proven by an inquiry.

V Balamurugan, one of the senior joint directors in the department, was served the order for compulsory retirement recently, sources said.

“There was a complaint against Balamurugan that he demanded money while inspecting schools when he was the chief educational officer of Tiruvannamalai district. The directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC) probed the complaint,” sources said.

After the inquiry, the DVAC sent a report to the school education department for further action.

“Balamurugan had more than 10 years of service left. Many years ago, the department sent a chief educational officer, Sudharshan, on compulsory retirement. After that, it is only now that a senior officer is being sent on compulsory retirement,” a source said.
