BHOPAL: Private medical and dental colleges in the state are out to ignore Medical Council of India (MCI) circular that would have, for the first time, ensured merit based selection for non-resident Indian (NRI) quota seats.
An entrance examination would have meant stopping misuse of NRI quota for giving out-of-turn admission in MBBS and BDS course. Activists like Dr Anand Rai who hailed MCI decision now allege foul play on part of directorate of medical education (DME) and association of private dental and medical colleges (APDMC)
"DME should take action against private medical and dental colleges and cancel their no-objection certificate (NoC). NRI seats are being used to fill candidates, who otherwise cannot qualify basic MCI norms to get admission to a medical college," Dr Rai said.
Earlier in April, acting on a MCI circular, MP directorate of medical education has asked medical and dental colleges to admit students under NRI quota based on merits through a common entrance test. NRI quota common entrance test from academic year 2015-2016 for government colleges has been conducted.
Action on DME letter to private medical and dental colleges depends on view taken by Madhya Pradesh admission and fees regulatory committee (MPAFRC) and association of private dental and medical colleges in the state (APDMC). When contacted, MPAFRC and APDMC officials did not respond.
Until now, NRI quota students did not have to appear for entrance exam and were admitted on basis of the Class 12 performance.
A complaint was recently lodged with MPAFRC alleging that several candidates admitted to medical colleges of the state under NRI quota do not meet mandatory eligibility norms for admission under NRI quota scheme. Several candidates scoring less than 50% marks in Class 12 were given admission. Many are not even NRIs and their admissions were against court rulings. They have neither appeared for MPPMT nor DMAT examination.
