Southern rly introduces ‘Suvidha’ special trains

TRICHY: To meet the demand on popular routes, Southern Railway has introduced Suvidha special trains with a flexible fare system. Passengers have given thumbs up to the new special trains.

After facing criticism from passengers on premium trains that were operated on dynamic fares, Southern Railway has decided to try a new system by introducing Suvidha special trains.

Southern Railway will begin its 'Suvidha special train' operation in the state from Chennai Egmore to Tirunelveli on August 14.

According to railway officials, Train No.00603 Chennai Egmore-Tirunelveli 'Suvidha' special train will leave Chennai Egmore at 9pm on August 14 (Friday) and will reach Tirunelveli at 10.45am the next day with stoppages at Tiruchchirappalli, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar and Kovilpatti. The special train will be operated on August 21 and 28 as well. Advance reservations for the trains have commenced from July 17 and are filling briskly, say railway officials.

S Kalyani, a passenger, said the dynamic fare system was introduced on a par with airlines, which led to many passengers feeling the pinch. Besides, there was no cancellation under the dynamic fare system. Reservation on regular trains usually commences 60 days in advance, whereas it was 15 days in case of premium trains for the benefit of passengers who plan their journey at a short time period and also assured of a confirmed accommodation.

For Suvidha special trains, maximum advance reservation period will be 30 days while the minimum advance reservation period will be 10 days. Each zonal railways can decide the exact advance reservation period for trains within its limit.

With only limited stoppages, passengers are delighted that the Suvidha service be continued. Train number 00604 Tirunelveli - Chennai Egmore 'Suvidha' special train will leave Tirunelveli at 2.45pm on Sundays (August 16, 23 and 30) and reach Chennai Egmore at 4.20am the next day. Railway officials said that the composition of the trains will be one AC 2-tier, one AC 3-tier, 12 sleeper class and two luggage-cum-brake vans.
