Additional MBBS seats: hospital deans to meet officials in Chennai

MCI had identified shortcomings in infrastructure and faculty in the colleges

The Deans of four government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu will meet top Health Department officials in Chennai on Wednesday to discuss the measures needed to comply with the Medical Council of India (MCI) norms to increase the MBBS seats in their colleges.

Official sources told The Hindu here on Monday that the Deans will put forth the additional infrastructure and the staff needed for increasing the seats.

The four colleges are: the Coimbatore Medical College, which has sought an increase from 150 to 250 seats, Kanyakumari Government Medical College (from 100 to 150 seats), Tirunelveli Government Medical College (from 150 to 250 seats) and Madurai Medical College (from 155 to 250 seats).

The total capacity addition proposed in these colleges is 345 seats.

Seats

The maximum number of seats permitted for a medical college in India is 250. Now, there are only two medical colleges in Tamil Nadu that have 250 seats each. They are the Madras Medical College and Stanley Medical College, officials said.

Lacunae

Teams from MCI had already visited the four colleges earlier this year. However, they identified several lacunae in the colleges and turned down their proposal to increase the seats.

The CMC came in for severe criticism from MCI assessors, which almost resulted in the college losing recognition for even the existing MBBS seats.

Following this, the State and Central Governments sanctioned Rs. 451.60 crore to four Government medical colleges.

The Coimbatore Medical College will receive Rs. 120 crore to take up development and expansion works.

Infrastructure

Hospital officials said that the requirements of CMC spanned three major categories — infrastructure, equipment and staff.

The college required additional lecture halls, laboratories, staff quarters and a new academic block.

The existing buildings were originally designed for 100 students and later altered to accommodate another 50.

Faculty

Further, the college also needed to create new posts including 12 professors, 18 associate professors, 10 assistant professors and 12 tutors besides 73 senior residents and 9 junior residents.

Officials expressed hope that all these works can be completed within a couple of years after which the college can begin offering the additional seats.
