GMCH BSc nursing course recognition process begins

NAGPUR: The medical education department has finally initiated the process for recognition of BSc nursing degree course at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after a delay of nine years.

The state government is now contemplating appointment of the teaching staff by the department itself instead of Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC).

Five batches have passed out since the launch of the course in 2006. It virtually remained un-recognized by the Indian Nursing Council (INC), the Maharashtra Nursing Council (MNC) and the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) since the state government did not recruit qualified staff in all these years.

The move came only after the issue was raised by the nursing union in the board of visitors meeting headed by the board's chairman and union surface transport minister from city Nitin Gadkari.

State medical education secretary Medha Gadgil told TOI that her department had prepared a cabinet note and sent it for the approval for filling of these posts by the department instead of MPSC as the commission had failed to fill these posts even after the posts were created in 2014 and GR in this regard was also issued.

"Medical education department has taken up the job of filling posts of associate professors and professors in the medical colleges this year itself. We have already completed interviews of 19 professors and 70 associate professors by constituting a separate selection board. These persons will soon be posted at the colleges with vacancies. Hence, we will now fill the nursing teachers' posts also," said Gadgil.

As per the INC and MNC norms, the college should have at least 15 lecturers, 9 associate professors, one vice principal and one principal (a professor).
