The Union health and family welfare ministry will decide on the quota for Puducherry students for the MBBS course in Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) after the National Testing Agency takes over the conduct of entrance examination for admission from 2020.

Currently, 54 of 200 MBBS seats in Jipmer (150 in Puducherry and 50 seats in Karaikal) are earmarked for Puducherry students. There is a proposal to increase the number of seats from 200 to 250 from 2020.

A Jipmer official said the institute has sent details on reservation and quota pattern followed by the institute so far to the ministry. “The ministry sought details on reservation and quota (for Puducherry students). We sent documents explaining reservation and quota pattern followed by the institute. We are not in the position to decide on the issue. We have done our job. Most probably, the ministry may follow the same pattern and publish details on reservation and quota in the prospectus,” said the official.

The Union health and family welfare ministry, in an official correspondence to Jipmer, said the ministry will hold a common and uniform National eligibility cum entrance test (Neet) for admission to the undergraduate medical courses in all medical institutions as per the provisions of Section

(14) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019. The institute, following the communication, announced that it will not hold entrance examinations for admission into MBBS course from 2020.

“Admission to MBBS course in Jipmer, Puducherry and Jipmer, Karaikal, will be made through National Entrance Eligibility Test (Neet UG) and the entrance exam will be conducted by the National Testing Agency and not by Jipmer from 2020 onwards,” said a notice from Jipmer.
