NASHIK: The Maharashtra University of Health Science ( MUHS) has decided to have 80% of its approved staffers and the rest of the officials in its affiliated colleges as per the norms stated under various councils to improve upon the quality of health education in the state.
This was decided in the first academic council of the year held on the university premises on Friday, making the norms stricter for colleges affiliated to it.
University vice-chancellor Arun Jamkar said the institute has decided to step up the quality of education for the past four years and the new decision was a part of it . "It has been decided that compared to previous years, the colleges affiliated to the university will have to fill 80% of the staffers approved by the university. The remaining 20% will have to be filled as per the norms of central councils like Dental Council of India (DCI), Medical Council of India (MCI) and others," he said.
Jamkar said this would ensure that the necessary staffers were made available in each college and the teachers could spend their working time efficiently and qualitatively for teaching as required by the university. It would be mandatory on the part of a teacher to complete 200 hours of teaching in a single academic year, he added.
The VC said that the university was also focusing on improving quality through the academic audit held every year. "Apart from inspecting infrastructure, the teams appointed for the academic audit are also checking what has been taught to students in colleges. The university is also focusing on food, hostel and other facilities provided by the colleges," Jamkar told TOI.
University registrar Kashinath Garkal said during the 2012-13 academic year, the academic council had allowed 65% of the staff in affiliated colleges, which was increased to 70% in 2013-14. "The number of staffers to be hired was further increased 75% for the 2014-15 academic year. It has been extended to 80% this year," he added.
Garkal said there was no defined number of teachers to be hired in some colleges from central councils and hence, such institutes would have to fill 90% of the total staff capacity.
