CHENNAI: A 50-year-old employee of a ration shop committed suicide at his residence on Mint Street in Washermenpet on Thursday evening.
V Elangovan's relatives claimed that he took the extreme step as he was unable to bear the pressure from the senior officials. However, the staff at the ration shop said Elangovan, who engaged in the packaging work at the shop in J J Nagar, had been pulled up for mismanagement of funds and was placed under suspension for two days after a raid at the shop.
He was reportedly questioned for mismanagement of 15,000 in the accounts.
Elangovan went inside his room at 2pm saying that he was going to sleep for a while but did not come out for a long time. Around 5.30pm, his brother went to check on him and found him hanging. He immediately informed the Washermenpet police who moved the body to Stanley Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.
His relatives handed over a suicide note to the police, reportedly written by the victim. The note, written on April 22, mentioned the names of the joint registrar and deputy registrar and said that they harassing him. "I have never faced such humiliation in my 32 years of service in the department," wrote the victim in his suicide note.
The members of the ration shop staged a sit-in for a sometime on Friday evening in Washermanpet demanding justice.
Police are trying to verify whether the suicide note was written by Elangovan.
Staff, however, said that Elangovan had been suspended for mismanagement of 15,000 in the accounts.
