A tumour misdiagnosed as pregnancy has landed Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for Women and Children at Triplicane here in legal trouble, as the woman whose hope of motherhood was shattered has approached the Madras high court seeking action against the doctors responsible for the mistake.
Asina Begum also wanted the court to direct the hospital authorities to pay ₹5 lakh as compensation for the mental agony suffered by her due to the misdiagnosis. Admitting the plea, Justice T Raja ordered notice to the secretary of health and family welfare department and the hospital management returnable by two weeks.
According to Begum, she was diagnosed as being pregnant by doctors attached to the hospital on April 11, 2016. Since she was declared ‘pregnant’ six years after her marriage, the petitioner and her family had rejoiced.
November 18, 2016 was tentatively declared as her delivery date by the doctors. But as Begum did not develop labour pain even after the scheduled date for delivery, she grew suspicious and visited the hospital. After conducting a scan test, the doctors assured her that the baby was in good health and advised her to wait for some more days.
On November 21, 2016, she was rushed to the hospital due to severe pain in the abdomen. After conducting a series of tests, doctors informed Begum that she was wrongly diagnosed as pregnant and it was actually a tumor that had developed in her abdomen.
A second opinion taken by the petitioner from a private scan centre also confirmed the tumour growth in her abdomen.
Distressed by the wrong diagnosis, Begum made a complaint to the National Human Rights Commission against the hospital besides approaching the high court for compensation and action against the erring doctors.
Admitting the plea, HC ordered notice to the secretary of health and family welfare department and the hospital management returnable by two weeks
