Once the arch rival and a figure of contempt for the AIADMK, especially when former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was alive, DMK president M. Karunanidhi drew moderate praise from his principal opposition party.
Mr. Karunanidhi has been the target of severe criticism by the AIADMK, both inside the Assembly and at public meetings.
His opponents used to leave no stone unturned to rubbish the DMK chief’s schemes and achievements.
But with his health suffering a setback and in the absence of Jayalalithaa who had them on a tight leash, AIADMK members have struck a conciliatory tone in their comments about Mr. Karunanidhi.
Senior AIADMK MP and Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M. Thambi Durai on Saturday said the party did not hold any political hatred towards Mr. Karunanidhi.
No political hatred
“He came in the footsteps of Periyar and Anna. We don’t have any political hatred towards him. There might have been difference of opinion….With MGR and Amma (Jayalalithaa) also, he had lots of differences of opinion,” he said.
The ruling party members recalled his contribution to the cause of Tamil culture and Tamils worldwide.
Mr. Thambi Durai said the party recognised that Mr. Karunanidhi was a leader of Tamils and one who fought for Tamil Nadu and the rights of Tamils.
“We will only be happy if he recovers and gets well,” he told reporters in Karur.
Dairy Development Minister K.T. Rajenthra Bhalaji said the DMK leader had worked for Tamil culture and Dravidian ideology.
AIADMK MP V. Maitreyan expressed happiness that Mr. Karunanidhi’s health had improved.
Revenue Minister R.B. Udhayakumar told reporters in Madurai that the DMK president had worked hard as both Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
