A Trichy-Chennai IndiGo flight had to abort landing and go around soon after coming in to land at Chennai airport on Friday. The 70-seat ATR aircraft scheduled to land at 5.40pm flew around and returned to land safely. This caused a delay of around 20minutes. The incident triggered panic among passengers as the plane took a sharp take off soon after coming in for a touch down on the main runway from the Guindy-end.
DMK MLA TRB Raja who was one of the passengers in the flight said people inside the aircraft panicked when they saw the pilot taking off immediately. It looked like the plane was about to touch down on one landing gear before the pilot aborted the landing, he added.
Sources said the flight came down to less than 500feet above the runway when the pilot aborted the landing. “The pilot reported it as ‘unstabilised approach’ hinting that the plane did not meet all parameters for a good landing,” said an official. Passengers might have got panicked because the small plane must have made a steep climb, he added.
He also said pilots often do the go-around procedure if they find approach for landing as unstable. “This may be because of the wind speed or the alignment of the approach and other reasons. It is the decision of the pilots. There have been many instances of pilots deciding to do go around because they felt landing might not be safe,” he added.
