A 16-year-old boy, driving a sedan, fatally knocked down an elderly woman selling idly on the roadside in Madurai on Saturday. The 65-year-old grandfather, who owned the car and who was with the boy at the time of the accident, has been booked along with the minor for allowing him to operate the vehicle without a driving licence.
The victim was identified as M Pazhaniammal, 60, of Vaigai Vadagarai in Madhichiyam. She was sitting on a platform selling idly at Shenoy Nagar in the city, hardly 50 metres away from the car parked on the roadside.
The minor, who was trying to reposition the car, ended up accelerating it. The vehicle lunged forward and rammed the woman at high speed. She was rushed to Government Rajaji hospital on an ambulance with injuries to her head and limb, but the doctors declared her brought-dead. Based on a complaint from her son M Gunasekaran, a case was registered by the Tallakulam traffic investigation wing.
‘Parents should not allow their wards to drive without licence’
The minor boy and his grandfather, a local AIADMK functionary, were booked under IPC Sections 299 — rash driving or riding on a publicway— and34(A) — acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention — besides under the sections of Motor Vehicles Act.
Police said the boy, a Class IX dropout, worked in a mechanic shop near Mattuthavani. After his father died a few years ago, he and his mother Amutha had shifted to her parents’ house near Ramarayar Mandapam in Shenoy Nagar.
A higher police officer from the Madurai city traffic wing said that parents should not allow their wards to drive the vehicle without a valid licence. “In such untoward incidents, the owner of the vehicle will also be penalised for allowing a person without valid licence to drive.”
He said the accident was another instance of death caused by violation of road rules when they were taking efforts to bring down fatalities. Recently, three minors were killed in an accident near Avaniyapuram when their rashly-driven scooter collided with a mini truck
