Twenty-one schoolchildren had a narrow escape on Friday afternoon when their schoolbus was completely submerged under a waterlogged railway underpass in Kharkhoda area of the city. The incident happened when the vehicle was on its way to drop the kids home.

According to police, the bus while passing through the underpass near Chandsara village began submerging in the water. The city has received heavy showers in the past two days.

Shrieks of children caught the attention of villagers nearby who jumped into the water and saved all the children by evacuating them through the bus windows. By the time, the last child was rescued, the bus had completely gone under the water.

“I was passing by when I heard the scream of terrified children who got trapped. The bus had begun to submerge by then. Realizing there was little time, I jumped and began pulling the kids through the windows. Fortunately, more villagers had gathered by then and they all helped in rescuing the children,” said Salman Ahmad, a resident of Chandsara village.

Station officer of Partapur police station, Girija Shankar Tripathi, said, “When the driver felt that it wasn’t wise to drive the bus further, he tried to turn back the vehicle but by then water had entered the silencer and the vehicle’s engine stopped. Water was rising continuously and the driver along with the conductor then started evacuating the children and a villager named Salman jumped into the water and rescued the panic-stricken children.”
