The man who shot and the woman who died had no grudge between them. The drama in the room was not about them. He had tagged along with a friend, she looked in out of curiosity. And then, bang. That’s the story of the body that was found dumped at a Delhi hospital on Wednesday night.

The sequence of events became clear after police tracked down and arrested the main suspect, Sunny, on Friday. DCP (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said the pistol used in the crime had also been found in his possession, and a hunt is on for his accomplice, Pawan.

On Wednesday evening, Pawan and Sunny had visited a Dilshad Garden house that doubles as a boutique. Pawan knew the boutique owner well, and had been in a relationship with one of her workers till four months ago. After he broke off with her for another woman, she allegedly told his wife about his new love. Pawan was on a mission to frighten his ex into silence, for which he had armed himself with a pistol.

Pawan and Sunny reached the house at 8pm. The owner greeted them. Pawan asked her to call his ex. As soon as she entered, Pawan got up, pulled the pistol out of his pocket, and stared at her. The other women working in the room screamed. Pawan passed the pistol to Sunny.

Disturbed by the noise, the 24-year-old victim, who was working in the other room, came out to see what was happening, and seeing the pistol in Sunny’s hand, asked him if it was a toy. He told police he fired straight into her abdomen from less than 5 metres away, just to make a point.

As she collapsed in front of 10 witnesses, the two men and the boutique owner drove her to a hospital, dumped her on a stretcher and fled.
