COIMBATORE: In what could be bad news for students aspiring to get into medical colleges, it has been revealed that their performance in the zoology part of the Biology paper in the recently held plus two exams is poor.
But the fact remains that Biology paper, this year, was very tough.
“This year, Biology question paper was very tough. There were lots of unexpected questions. They have asked four questions from just one chapter of Zoology, which normally is not the case,” said a Biology teacher who is part of the evaluation process at a centre in the city. I have not seen such a tough question paper in my 35 years of teaching experience, she added.
A Biology teacher, on condition of anonymity said, “In the last four days of evaluating Biology answer sheets, only one student has scored 75 out of 75 in Botany and Zoology - both parts of the Biology subject. Many students who have secured 75 out of 75 in Botany have managed to score just 40-50 marks in the Zoology part. This will definitely affect their dream of joining a medical college.”
For instance, one of the students, who has scored 66 marks in Botany has managed to score just eight marks in Zoology, she explained.
In the last three years, 620 (2012), 682 (2013) and 652 (2014) students had scored centum in Biology.
Admission for medical and dental courses is done based on marks secured in Biology (100 marks), Physics and Chemistry (50 marks each).
As students, who failed to make it to either a medical or a dental college by a whisker, last year, would be applying this year, the current batch of students are at a disadvantage on account of their below-average performance.
The Plus Two public examination was held between March 5 and 31. The examination for the Biology subject was held on March 31, which was attended by around five lakh students.
