Anna University Seeks Alumni Aid to Build Auditorium

CHENNAI: Anna University has been granted clearance to construct a `45 crore 5000-seater indoor auditorium-cum-stadium on its campus, by the State Government. Speaking to City Express, university officials said that the huge auditorium was of vital importance as the institute was struggling to accomodate people into its current 800-seater auditorium.

“During last year’s convocation held for PhD scholars, over 1100 scholars were conferred degrees and we couldn’t accomodate all students,” said a university official.

“Year on year, the number of students, faculty, visitors and others who turn out for events held by us touch 3000 regularly. So this auditorium will help accomodate them all,” another official said.

Sources said that the land identified for the building to come up is located near the Mechanical Engineering workshop. “This includes the land transferred to us from the Highways Department a few years back,” an official said.

Registrar Dr S Ganesan, who during the Madras Institute of Technology Alumni meet held on Tuesday, made an appeal to the University alumni to come forward and donate to help with the construction of the auditorium/stadium at the College of Engineering campus.

“While the state government will likely allot funds, it cannot be all of it. The rest will have to be secured by the University. That is the reason we are approaching the alumni,” he said.

University sources said that the move to approach alumni for funding was taken up after the State Government’s Finance Committee mooted the idea. “We will soon be setting up a committee to draw out plans on how best to reach out to our alumni many of whom are in a financial position from where they can donate,” an official said.

The university’s sports board deputy chairman and MIT Alumni Association’s vice-president M Veerabadran said that when the auditorium was not being used for events, it will double up as an indoor stadium which will allow students to utilise for indoor sports activities. “It will be used for a variety of sports including badminton, tennis and even basketball,” he said.
