The University Grants Commission (UGC) has instituted a committee to look into allegations of administrative negligence and misuse of funds by vice-chancellor of Manipur University Aditya Prasad Pandey.

The probe panel, headed by UGC joint secretary J K Tripathy, was formed following an advisory from the state government to the ministry of human resource development.

With students of the university on strike since May 31 demanding immediate resignation of Pandey as well an independent probe, the Manipur government suggested the HRD ministry to send the VC on leave, fearing law and order problem.

The committee is likely to submit its report by the end of this month.

Pandey becomes the latest VC of a central university to face an inquiry after the probe against the VC of Tripura Central University Anjan Kumar Ghosh in March this year. Earlier, inquiries were conducted against the VCs of Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University and Allahabad University. Since 2015, the Centre has got VCs of Visva-Bharati (Sushanta Dattagupta), Puducherry University (Chandra Krishnamurthy) and Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (J L Kaul) removed through presidential approval after probe.

MU students had submitted a charter of demands to the university authorities, which also accused Pandey of trying to “saffronise” the university while faculty members alleged dereliction of duty on the part of the VC resulting in delay in academic and administrative work.
