Works to take over medical college begin

CHENNAI, JULY 21, 2018 00:00 IST

The State government has initiated steps to take over IRT Perundurai Medical College, Erode.

Officials of the Health Department said the government has given in-principle approval to take over the medical college. “The Chief Minister had earlier made an announcement that the college will be taken over by the government. We have initiated discussions to take this forward. We want to run it as a hybrid model like how the Employees State Insurance Corporation Medical College at Coimbatore,” a senior official said.

Run by the Institute of Road Transport, the medical college presently has 100 seats. He added that the government would ensure the smooth take over of IRT Perundurai Medical College without affecting the interest of the transport employees. “We are consulting with the Finance and Law departments on taking this forward,” he added.

Another health official said they are looking at the modalities of absorbing the existing staff of the institution. “There are certain issues such as entry level cadre of faculty members and pay parity. We will have to see how they can be absorbed. The modalites for negotiations have to be finalised, and there would be at least two to three rounds of talks,” he said.

He added that the government is keen on having a medical college in every district. “Now, there is no government medical college in Erode. When this proposal came up, we thought IRT Perundurai could be the institution for this district,” he said.
