Trichy: Are departments in Bharathidasan University (BDU) missing out information on certain important UGC schemes or are they ignoring them as such? Going by the way they responded to a scheme to support research projects that are socially relevant and need-based, it could be both ways, say a section of faculty members.

Even when two state universities including a central university from the state got funding up to Rs 1 crore under UGC’s Scheme for Trans-disciplinary research for India's developing economy (Stride), the departments in Bharathidasan University (BDU) drew a blank. BDU was not in the list of institutions released by UGC last week for funding under component – 1 (research capacity building and human resource development) of UGC–Stride.

Stride was introduced in July with an objective to strengthen research culture and innovation in higher education. September 30 was fixed as the last date to submit online proposal for individuals and the funding ranged from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 1 crore. Madurai Kamaraj University, Alagappa University and Central University of Tamil Nadu were among the universities selected for the project apart from Holy Cross College in Trichy.

Bharathidasan University registrar G Gopinath says not many of the departments were interested in the project. Besides, the university was busy with NAAC work when the Stride portal was opened to receive online proposal. He said faculty members didn’t show interest in the project as they opted for other schemes like scientific and useful profound research advancement (Supra) and Scheme for promotion of academic and research collaboration (Sparc) considered to be superior to Stride. While ten faculty members applied for Supra, the university is recipient of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) funds of Rs 50 crore. Senior faculty members from the university however said that most of the departments were unaware of the scheme. “The scheme was to promote creation, development and integration of new ideas, concepts and practices for public good and strengthening civil society. Not many were aware of the scheme because of which not a single faculty member could send their proposal,” said a senior faculty member adding that the university administration must sharing such details of the scheme to the departments and monitor their response.
