Six colleges under RGUHS to get ‘smart’

Under the project, tablet PCs with Internet facilities will be given to students

The concept of ‘smart university’ will be introduced on a trial basis in six medical colleges in the State that come under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).

Under the project, a tablet PC will be provided to each student with Internet and pre-paid fixed data download limit assigned, at a fee of Rs. 600 a month, which covers all benefits along with allocated internet download charges. Those who do not want to take the tablet PC can pay Rs. 300 a month and get internet connectivity, Minister of State for Medical Education Sharan Prakash Patil has said.

JJM Medical College, Davangere; Father Muller Medical College, Mangaluru; Navodaya Medical College, Raichur; Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences, Gadag; SDM Medical College, Dharwad, and Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences, Mandya, have been chosen for implementing the initiative.

According to the Minister, Arkaa Eduplus Pvt. Ltd. floated the idea of smart university to RGUHS and the university, in turn, wrote to principals of affiliated colleges to respond to the concept after broaching the idea among students.

The issue was also discussed in the Syndicate meeting held on June 26, and it was decided to implement the concept.

The smart university concept will be introduced in other colleges only if students agree. The six colleges were chosen after taking the consent of the students, the Minister said.
