Five TN Engineering Colleges Fail to Renew Affiliation

CHENNAI: Bogged by poor intake of students, five self-financing engineering colleges chose not to renew their affiliation with the Anna University this year and consequently did not participate in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions single window counselling. These institutions are located in Salem, Kodaikanal, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Dindigul.

Besides, a Coimbatore-based institution has voluntarily announced suspension of admission for the MBA programme and another college in Erode has withdrawn admissions for the MCA course, according to an official of the Anna University here. “All colleges affiliated to the university should have applied for renewal of affiliation before January this year.

But five engineering colleges, which managed to attract fewer students last year, did not apply for the renewal and have volunteered to shut down,” said the official. Meanwhile, a senior official at the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) said that the institutions should obtain a No Objection Certificate from the DoTE before winding up a campus. “Institutions would be allowed to shut down only with the permission of the All India Council for Technical Education based on the State Government’s recommendation,” he said.

The DoTE would issue a NOC for processing the closure of a college only after existing students pass out or are transferred to other institutions with the approval of the AICTE and Anna University. Prof E Balagurusamy, former Vice Chancellor of Anna University, welcomed the decision of the seven colleges to wind up courses.

“Continuing operation when the management is unable to maintain the facilities and pay the teachers would affect the students,” he said adding that the quality of education was good only in the top 100 engineering colleges.

“The rate of unemployment has forced students to go for arts and science colleges if they unable to find a spot in these top institutions. The supply has exceeded the demand and the Government has failed to regulate this. It is high time that around 55 institutions which are in a similar state of despair should follow these seven institutions,” he added.
